What is the COP climate conference?

COP26 – the 26th annual Conference of Parties – takes place in Glasgow from 31 October – 12 November 2021.

This is widely seen as the last opportunity for world leaders to come together to find ways to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees C.

It will be a big ask as projections show that current pledges will, instead of achieving a hoped for 45% cut in emissions by 2030, actually see a 16% rise. There is still a long way to go !

30,000 delegates will be travelling to Scotland – mostly by air – to deliver new commitments to cut emissions and to pledge new money to help the poorer nations combat climate change.

Channel 4 News sets the scene for COP26 – what it needs to achieve and why it is so important.
