Fishing groups in the English Channel declare a state of emergency

For much of the summer Greenpeace has been patrolling the English Channel as part of Operation Ocean Witness.

They have been confronting French trawlers using the unsustainable industrial fishing method known as ‘fly shooting’.

One fly shooter catches the same as 11 smaller fishing boats.

Greenpeace Oceans Campaigner Chris Thorne says local fishermen are in ‘complete crisis’ as a result of the fly shooters.

Fisheries Conservation Scientist Professor Michel Kaiser of Heriot Watt University explains how the fly shooters are removing in a few weeks the amount of fish the local fishermen would usually catch across a whole year.

Greenpeace has joined with the local fishermen in declaring a state of emergency and calling for a ban on the fly shooting.
